European Energy System

We need Power

We need energy in the correct amount at the right time.

Electricity

One part of our energy system is electricity. Generation and consumption has to be in balance at any time.

The PowerCalculator shows you the electricity generation of european countries at a specific time interval.

Here we see Austria hydro pumps working together with german photovoltaics (Solar) and the Danube power stations.

Chemical Energy

The mayor part of europians energy consumption is used in form of chemical energy like diesel for driving and gas for heating. This energy is easy to store and has a high energy and power density.

To visualize our energy needs, we take the average power consumption for chemical energy and combine it we the electricity generation.

CO2 emissions

In this graphic we have two shade of orange. The top one is the CO2 emitted by gas based electricity generation.

The PowerCalculator shows the CO2 emissions of european contries at any time based on entsoe statistics.

Based on this specific week in Austria we can make some conclusions.

Wind and Solar provide a very small amount of energy compared to the others.

Looks like it's not so easy to prevent climate change.
If it would be easy you wouldn't be here.

Future Plan

  • Add renewable energy
  • Electrify transport
  • Storage
  • Nuclear
